Having a smooth newborn session is what I strive for. Not necessarily for myself but for my clients. I know the first few weeks can be stressful and getting out of the house can be scary. I assure you, coming to the studio can be the most relaxing thing on your schedule that week. It's warm, I have a soft couch for you to sit on, relaxation music will be on and I will calm your baby to sleep for the session. Here are 5 things you can do leading up to your session before we start. This can be for my clients or anyone with an upcoming newborn session.

This one is important. If you want the photographer you prefer, book while you are pregnant. Often times, we book fast and only book so many clients each month. Last minute bookings can be tricky if our schedule is full. That could result in missing the newborn window.

Booking early also means you get plenty of time to communicate with your photographer for session expectations and dreams. Send all the inspo you found that inspires you. Share that with your photographer and give them plenty of time to customize your session.

When is the best time to book your newborn session? Mention it when you plan your maternity session. Your photographer may coordinate your session and create some amazing imagery that pairs well together.

You can find inspiration everywhere! This is a very exciting step in your newborn photography experience. Find everything you love and share it with your photographer. Think about what you love from each image. Is it the props? The colors? The lighting? The pose? The emotion? Let us know! All the sharing will help your newborn photographer understand you hopes for your session.

It is pre session day! Most newborn photographers send out a prep guide before the session. This is for you. It helps prepare you for your session and lets you know what to expect. Be sure to check your email daily for it or ask your photographer if they send one. I do! Take the time to read it through.

Your baby is here, and it is finally the day of your session! Stressful feelings may arise since babies are unpredictable. But do not stress. Remember, we have had many babies come through our studios. We have calmed many babies and the same number of moms. We set up the atmosphere for prime relaxation for the baby. The more relaxed you are, the more the baby will be. Trust your newborn photographer and enjoy the moment, baby will never be this small again.

I have moms, or dads, feed after settling in at the studio. Some photographers do things differently. Likely, you will find out the guidelines in your newborn prep guide. I like it when babies come ready to eat, so mom can take a moment to relax before we begin, and baby gets to be happy from a tummy full of milk. We want those babies milk drunk!
